From Sketch to Sofa
Every Made by TallBoy sofa begins with a question: how should this piece make a room—and the people living within it—feel?
The answer is rarely found through appearance alone. A sofa can have a beautiful silhouette but still feel wrong if its proportions, seat depth or support have not been properly considered.
The process begins in the TallBoy studio in Yorkshire, where Matt develops the initial idea through sketches, reference imagery and material research. Designs may be informed by an antique detail, a piece of mid-century furniture or simply a form that has been quietly developing over time.
At this stage, the drawing is deliberately fluid. The overall character comes first: the line of the back, the relationship between the arms and seat, the height above the floor and the way the piece will occupy the room.
Those early sketches are then translated into practical dimensions. Small changes can transform how a sofa looks and feels. A few centimetres added to the seat can create a more relaxed position, while the pitch of the back influences both comfort and the external profile. Arm height, cushion filling and the relationship between the frame and upholstery all need to work together.
Once the proportions have been resolved, the design moves to our specialist makers in Nottingham. This is where the drawn outline begins to acquire its physical structure.
The frame establishes the strength and geometry of the sofa. Its internal support and upholstery are then built up with an understanding of how the finished piece should sit—not only when it first leaves the workshop, but after years of use.
Comfort is developed in layers. The support beneath the seat, the density and composition of the cushions and the shaping of the back all contribute to the final result. The aim is to create seating that feels generous and welcoming while retaining the integrity of its form.
Fabric is considered throughout the design process rather than added as a final decoration. A heavy bouclé can soften a tailored shape, while a stripe or herringbone can emphasise its architecture. Pattern direction, seams, piping, skirts and hand-finished edges can all significantly alter the character of the piece.
This is also where a Made by TallBoy design can become personal. Dimensions, configuration, upholstery and finishing details can be adapted for individual rooms and the way a client wants to live.
A final piece should not feel as though every decision is asking for attention. The best results are those in which the frame, upholstery, fabric and proportions appear entirely natural together.
That sense of ease is only achieved through a series of careful choices—from the first line on paper to the final inspection in the workshop.
Made by TallBoy is our opportunity to create furniture with the presence and individuality we value in antiques, while responding to how people live today. Each piece is developed in Yorkshire, handmade in Britain and intended to remain part of an interior for many years to come.
