The Piece
About this piece
An impressive 17th century Italian painting of truly substantial scale, presented in a later 19th century gilt frame. This is a piece with real presence, combining a wonderfully atmospheric religious scene with the rich, softened colours that make early paintings so appealing.
There is plenty to draw you in, from the angels playing musical instruments amongst the clouds to the cherubs and beautifully flowing drapery. Warm ochre tones sit alongside muted reds and blues, with expressive faces and small details rewarding a closer look. Despite its grand scale, there is a lovely gentleness to the composition.
The canvas was relined in the early 20th century, and the surface shows age and wear, giving it the depth and character visible today. The slender gilt frame finishes the painting neatly, allowing the scene itself to take centre stage.
Its massive size makes this a particularly exciting decorative piece. Above a large console, on a generous staircase or as the focal point of a room, it would bring remarkable warmth, history and impact. One of those paintings that can quite comfortably carry an entire wall.
Frame has small losses and wear and the painting has been re lined and backed to preserve the original canvas.
